Frequently Asked Questions
Where should we do the portrait session?
I love capturing children relaxed and enjoying themselves. Ideally, the location should be relatively easy to get to and somewhere kids can have fun and explore. Parks, fields, playgrounds, the beach, woodsy areas - anywhere there is natural light.
What time of day is best for the photos?
When photographing kids, I like to get them at their best so after a nap or after lunch works well. Morning light and late afternoon light is best for outdoor photos because it's softer and not as harsh at noon-time sun. It always depends on the little ones so working around their schedule is important. We don't want tired, hungry or sick kids for a photo shoot.
Who should be involved in the photo shoot and what should we bring?
The main subjects of the photos and the parents are all that will be needed. We don't want to have too many people there because that can be a distraction. I love to have parents ready with a toy, a silly song, a crazy dance or a surprise - anything to make that little one smile. Props can be great for younger children and can help them look at the camera. Blankets - in a neutral color - are perfect for sitting poses outdoors.
What should we wear?
I suggest something comfortable - first and foremost! If you're uncomfortable, it will show. I like to suggest solid colors and no patterns. Black and white photograph very well outdoors. Sometimes families like to dress alike in, for example, jeans and a white shirt. This can make a nice image if that's a look you'd like.
What happens if my child doesn't cooperate?
Kids are unpredictable and that's one of the many reasons we love them. If they really want nothing to do with the camera, we can plan another session but that's only after we've pulled out all the stops (songs, dances, treats, etc).
How does the deposit and payment process work?
I ask for a 50% deposit at the time of booking in the form of a check. The remainder of the session fee will be due the day of the portrait.
How will I view my portraits?
I like to schedule a follow up visit to review the images that I captured. Then they will be available online and you can make your print orders through me. Digital negatives can be purchased for an additional $300.
